THE CRAZE FOR NIGERIAN ANKARA FABRICS

Ankara fabric has come to be recognized as one of the most important fabrics in the fashion industry in Nigeria. The fabric which is produced originally as a Dutch wax started as a mass produced imitation of Indonesian batik in Holland by the Dutch textile manufacturers. The fabric was mass produced in Europe using an engraving roller print machine and dye resistant resin to design motifs and produced batik pattern on fabrics.

It gained popularity in Nigeria as a result of the ban on the importation of textiles in 2003 by former President of Nigeria, President Olusegun Obasanjo in an attempt to develop the non-oil sectors of Nigeria. Since then, the popularity of the fabric has grown in leaps and bounds and have even entered the international scene with such International celebrities like Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Nicky Minaj, Amber Rose, Kim Kardashian, Rihana and Anna Wintour been reported to rock the popular Ankara fabric to social events and award nights.

Though Nigerians, especially those from the Southern part of Nigeria have been using Ankara for a long time now, the current popularity of the fabric started after the ban on textile importation in Nigeria and today has come to become one of the most sought after fabric in the world.

 The Ankara can be worn to all and any type of event. You can wear an Ankara to a Wedding, Coronation ceremony Burial , Chieftaincy title and other social events you are invited to. Today, most Nigerians even use Ankara attires to the office as the casual wear for Friday.

World class Nigerian designers have also jumped on the band wagon for the Ankara fabric and created innumerable designs with a blend of other matching fabrics like lace and others to create different outfits for both the office and other formal and informal occasions. The Ankara has become so popular in Nigeria that ones wardrobe is never complete without a couple of Ankara pieces in them.

Women are most guilty in the new craze for the Ankara fabric. They know all the latest designs and would stop at nothing to acquire the Ankara material of a friend who is about to get married. It has even become a trend of sort for a couple to choose a particular Ankara cloth they want their friends and family to buy and wear on  their special day.

Tailors has been doing brisk business now solely on the Ankara fabrics. Woman would on a monthly basis throng their business premises asking them to create from simple to very complicated designs for their next wedding or engagement party.
